ViolinLearning Violin

Learning how to play the violin can be a rewarding experience that lasts a lifetime. To master it may take years of training, but it is never too late to begin learning whether you are young or old. Unfortunately, not everyone has access to a teacher and online resources are limited. This site will help get you started by providing the basics that you will need to know.

The Basics

The fundamental basics include the following:

  • Instrument Care and Basic Direction
  • Playing Position
  • Left and Right Hand Techniques
  • Fundamentals of Music

Instrument care and basic direction includes learning the parts of the violin and how to care for it, proper tuning, and suggestions for practicing. Playing position includes how to hold the violin and bow, proper posture while playing, and placement of the arms and hands. Left hand techniques include fingering, positions, and vibrato while right hand techniques include bow speed and pressure, proper strokes, and so on. Of course all of this means nothing unless you learn the fundamentals of music such as how to read music and to recognize musical terms and symbols. A very good site to learn the basics is Violin Online by Dr. Robin Kay Deverich. A great care guide can also be found at The Violin Site.
